In promotion of voluntary Eugenics! Not exactly
68In promotion of voluntary Eugenics!
Have you read the book Brave New World by fiction writer Aldous Huxley? Have you seen the movie Gattaca with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman? You must have heard about Hitler, the short evil Austrian man at the center of world war II? Okay so you know a little bit about eugenics. In short it's the philosophy that promotes human breeding base on genetic traits with the intention to improving heredity. You are absolutely right it is deviant, scary and it's been tried before. I agree full heartedly, so that's not quite what I'm about to entertain you on. Yes eugenics, but not the evil way. Previous attempts where not only hateful, but also potentially harmful to human heredity. What this is about is voluntary eugenics, naturally occurring eugenics, or shall we call it, the wave of the future eugenics. Okay before you read any further and become disappointed, let me come clean and tell you that this is a blatant promotion of interracial marriages. Don't stop reading just yet, I have backing to corroborate my claim that interracial marriage is actually not only a good thing, but potentially a saving grace for human kind.
The first tenants of eugenics have been adamant and dangerous racists. They observed what they deamed to be superior qualities based mainly on physical appearance and decided that it would be advisable to reproduce these physical traits in order to obtain a superior breed of people. Unfortunately what they failed to observe was the laws of nature that farmers and breeders have known for generations. In breeding is bad! It creates monster babies! Brothers, sisters and cousins don't marry not just because it awkward, but also because it limits the gene pool and increases the risk for preexisting dispositions to become sufficiently present in the gene pool and consequently produce sick babies.
Of course the Nazis did not intend for brothers and sisters to intermarry, but the effects of a limited gene pool can be experienced even with wider populations.
Take the Ashkenazim Jewish population, a group of Jews of Eastern European descent. It's been establish that one in four individuals is carrier of several genetic conditions. Tay-Sachs Disease, Canavan, Niemann-Pick, Gaucher, Familial Dysautonomia, Bloom Syndrome, Fanconi anemia, Cystic Fibrosis and Mucolipidosis IV to name only those.
African Americans and sickle cell anemia; It's a condition mainly observed with populations of African decent around the world. The disease occurs in about 1 in every 500 African- American births.
Ever heard of hemochromatosis ? It's Europe's most common genetic disease a condition caused by a genetic defect in the liver.
The French-Canadian population of Quebec; Descendentss of about 8500 French settlers who arrived in Nouvelle-France between 1608 and 1759. Their genetic disposition is for diseases practically unknown elsewhere. Autosomal recessive ataxia , agenesis of corpus callosum, peripheral neuropathy and French-Canadian-type Leigh syndrome.
Every group has it's own genetic predisposition.
Specialist have also observed increasing weakening of the human immune system do to the environmental changes, social habits and unhealthy food consumptions. That, coupled with the problem of genetic predispositions brings me right back to eugenics.
How can future generations better their gene pool and protect themselves and their children. Not through technology and ever more invasive and ethically questionable scientific discoveries. Not through seclusion and separation from the others. I'm unashamedly advocating for love. Let the people be intermarried, let the bloods be mixed and the genes be plenty. I envision a world were every child will have an ancestry so wide that it can be mapped through every continent twice around. I envision a world of Asian looking brown kids with blue eyes.
Is it crazy? Maybe, but wouldn't be beautiful.
